What to Think About When Decorating a Kitchen

If you have that bug to redo your kitchen, there are a few things you need to consider. Well, actually, there are a lot of things to consider. But, for the purposes of this article, we are going to discuss how you can apply the concepts of home decorating to create a nice matching kitchen or at least have your kitchen blend in with the rest of your living spaces. The problem with many homeowner's plans is that while the kitchen is one of the best places to spend time and money remodeling, some go overboard. If you think you might have a tendency to put too much time and effort into remaking your kitchen space, then this article will be the perfect solution for your situation.

Think about it like this, whether you plan on moving or staying put, there are some things that you should plan on doing and some things that are just too much. Given your particular home's architecture and floor plan or layout, having that 6 burner range top or the commercial stove might just be inappropriate use of your space. On the other hand, if you have a grand area that is well laid out, then you should consider some larger pieces, an island or some more formal kitchen-area dining to allow for a more balanced space.

Your choice in materials will also determine how well the overall design turns out. I wouldn't recommend using too much of one material. In other words, too much stone work; tile, granite, etc. can quickly take over a space. It is best to use each element for a specific theme and that allows the eye to naturally navigate the space. Having an area that is dominated by one material, like granite, can make a kitchen feel too 'monothematic'. The same could be said for color. While you don't want to have all sorts of competing colors and materials, different shades can do a lot to create more depth and richness to your space.

Many of the same home decorating and remodeling ideas can be applied to your kitchen space as well. Having furniture that is both functional and esthetically pleasing is a great way to go for a remodel. Too often, we think in terms of function only. Children and families can find furniture that both looks good and is easy to use as well. You don't have to worry so much about getting the 'good' furniture once the kids are out of the house. You might avoid some glass tables and primo Italian leather chairs and benches, but that doesn't mean you can't enjoy other quality pieces.

So, in the end, keep your adjacent rooms in mind when designing your new kitchen space. Since most newer homes have a more open floor plan with 'great rooms' the blending of one space to another is key. This doesn't mean that you should avoid demarcating rooms, it just means that if your kitchen remodeling is in complete contrast to the theme of the rest of your home, it will not only look odd, but will detract from your overall design.
